If NYC’s underground Techno community could be likened to a three ringed circus, Taimur Agha, 30, would be Master of Ceremonies. Between juggling his notorious Blk|market Membership events, producing The Bandwagon, halcyon’s popular podcast series, and working tirelessly as the head Techno honcho at the city’s top vinyl emporium, Taimur somehow holds down an increasingly in-demand DJ schedule.
It began for the Pakistani native upon arrival from his childhood home of Abu Dhabi in 1999. A run in with the infamously debaucherous club Twilo supplied all the inspiration he would need. Agha ran out to purchase turntables, and with some formative mentoring from none other that UK veteran Craig Richards, he was on his way.
Already a staple of the local after hours scene, in 2006 Taimur partnered with Fahad Haider to form Blk|market Membership with the simple goal of “bringing in the talent that inspires them as DJs.” They have since produced over 200 events in NYC, San Francisco and in Montreal, some drawing upwards of 2,500 party goers, earning Blk|market New York Magazine’s definitive nod as “NYC’s Best All Night Party.” Agha’s own deep and mesmerizing sets, always played on vinyl only, have come to the fore over 5 years as Blk|market’s co-resident, a role that has afforded him deck time alongside an enviable litany of the world’s hottest DJs, a list that includes Sven Vath, Laurent Garnier, Tyrant, DJ Koze, Scuba vs. Scb and Ben Klock, to name but a few. Perhaps even more impressive though, are the names of the artists Taimur has been instrumental in booking for their NYC debuts. They include Cassy, Margaret Dygas, Art Department, Melon, Mountain People, Jamie Jones, Matt Tolfrey, MyMy, Reboot and Wighnomy Brothers, all of whom have gone on to become staples of a NYC scene that owes no small debt to Agha’s dedication and ear for music.
In 2010 Taimur’s DJ prowess reached listeners far and wide; high profile podcast appearances on LA-based Droid Behavior, Autobrennt out of NY, Paris’ famed Get the Curse prompted invitations to Amsterdam, Arma 17 in Moscow and London, where he debuted at Fabric. He has also graced the decks at Three’s famous Snatch party in Tampa, in Hawaii and at Wolf+Lamb’s now world renowned Marcy Hotel shindigs. 2011 shall see the launch of a Blk|Market label followed perhaps by Taimur’s own production debut. Step right up ladies and gentleman!…
